Developers at SweetClarity
We are currently looking for developers and this is written with that wish in mind. Yet, most of what is said here is probably relevant to anyone who joins SweetClarity.
My wish is that everyone at SweetClarity experience creative space and freedom. My ideas about this are based on my personal experience (of working many years without this kind of space and recent years dominantly in this space) - so I assume that other people will have different needs. So before anything else, I wish to maintain relationships that are founded on trust, appreciation and a shared vision of where we are going together (if you haven’t already read it then please read out manifest) . I believe this will foster an open minded and agile environment that will change and adapt to accommodate exceptional individuals.
Diversity - Part Time Work
I have found that my best ideas for one project come up when I am immersed in something else (another project, driving, resting…). My days are filled with numerous types of projects and activities. Creativity crosses over between them. When I am involved in one project ideas appear for another.
I would therefore wish that developers who work at SweetClarity do so part time. Be involved in something else. I truly believe that your best ideas for SweetClarity will come to you when you are doing something else (and vice versa).
Responsibility - It is in Your hands
I have a very cynical opinion of dead-lines. They are just that. They are lines that when drawn out simply kill creativity. I can probably rant on for many pages on deadlines - but that will be mostly negative writing - so I will skip it. I do not want to work with dead-lines. I trust that when the conditions for creativity are created it appears. When I am in a creative zone nothing matters - I lose sense of time and I get completely involved in what I am doing. If I am not in this zone - I refrain from working. Instead I do what I can do recreate the conditions - go see a movie, swing in the hammock, read a good book, take a walk. Do whatever I need to do to feel comfortable and peaceful. Then I am irresistibly drawn into the work.
Rest- Feel Good
I believe that rest needs to be mixed into work. I do not burn myself through the week - knowing that rest will be found during the weekend. I rest all the time. My personal reality - is that I usually do only one task - then break away. The break (and the work) can be minutes, hours or if need be days. I approach my work from a rested state of being. I try not to push.
Agility & Trust - Change is Inherent
SweetClarity is constantly learning and changing. Our needs will change as our experience and understanding grow. This can lead to let-downs - when some projects are aborted and to inspiration when the curiosity of new ones appears. We have artistic direction built into the foundations of the project. This is a commitment that leads to both empowering support and honest criticism. We are committed to this path. I completely trust our artistic direction even when I am at odds with the direction in which it is pointing. This is a conscious choice - not a recurring struggle.
Payment
As of this writing (July 2008) SweetClarity has no funding and no revenues. We are working to raise funding to support the project. When we raise funding my intention is to establish a kind of art-patronage relationship with our developers. This means that you will be paid a sum of money to support you in return for dedicating time and attention to SweetClarity. This will not be a function of dead-lines or deliverables since there are none. We want you to be able to spend time with us and to enjoy it when you do.
Equity
SweetClarity will probably require business infrastructures to fully realize it’s potential. If and when this happens it may become a privately/publicly held entity. We have some ideas on how to share equity of this entity to people who are a part of SweetClarity - but for now we feel it is a premature subject that creates irrelevant and unnecessary complications. May this soon be a relevant topic for us all to discuss.
